Mentoring has become
a key method of intervention to provide surrogate support in those instances where adult advocacy is void, and a complementary element when the adult advocacy is limited in the scope of its contribution. Although research has established mentoring as an effective technique for intervention, it has also established the need to conduct comparisons with different models of mentoring relationships, different program components and characteristics of participants, using experimental designs to establish a best in class technique.

The Urban Institute’s empirical data highlights the following about existing mentoring and youth development programs, “The results of many years of program impact evaluations demonstrate that single-focus programs targeting at-risk adolescents may not be the most effective way to help youth. Increasing attention is being paid to programs capable of dealing with the whole child, including the child's parents and neighborhood. Thus, a major focus of this report is to learn more about the ability of programs to provide more comprehensive services to youth through service integration.”It is with this context and direction that the Kinetic Potential Scholars Program is born.

The KP Scholars Program is a long-term life development and mentoring program that integrates existing community resources, immersive education and innovative technology to deliver a comprehensive solution for the complex needs of today’s youth. Through experiential simulations and career development planning, scholars are given the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge about the consequences of poor decision
making, financial stewardship and to develop other key skills that are critical for successful independent living. The immersive education experience is designed to engage students in the same way that video games grab and keep the attention of players.
